Genetics is the study of biological variation and its inheritance. Exploring the fundamental control mechanisms of living systems, genetics is a field that underlies many modern biological research areas. Genetics is also involved in controversial areas, such as the use of genetically engineered crops and the ethical issues around human therapeutic cloning. Biological Sciences explores the study of living organisms, covering everything from the interactions of animals in their environment to how genes are expressed. The University of Edinburgh offer 12 different biological sciences subject areas, including genetics. Regardless of students initial application choice, they will have the opportunity to explore aspects of each of university's programs in the early years and choose to specialize in whichever one interests them.
The University of Edinburgh skills based curriculum will equip students with data analysis, programming and problem-solving skills, as well as teaching them effective communication, and independent thinking, preparing them to be a part of the next generation of scientific thinkers who apply their skills in various contexts.
