The Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education is a one academic year (36 week) course that trains graduates to be secondary school teachers of Business.
The PGCE programme has been designed to train teachers to practise as a subject specialist teacher for the secondary age range (14-19). Students are assessed against the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) across this age range. They will also gain practical experience of the 16-19 age range during their placement.
The aim of this PGCE in Business is to provide students with engaging and relevant professional training to enable their degree in Business related subjects to transform them into a capable and effective classroom practitioner. They will develop understanding of how students learn about Business and to be able to critically reflect upon their teaching to improve. The course prepares them to develop the necessary skills to teach Business in schools and colleges at GCSE and A level. In addition, the course will cover vocational qualifications such as BTEC.
Students will understand how Business is taught in schools, how students learn and how they begin to make sense of the changing nature of the business world. As a trainee teacher, they will complete a minimum of 120 days in school on placement practice. This will take place in at least two contrasting schools, in blocks of no less than six weeks, during which time they will be expected to demonstrate effective progress in their own practice and have a positive impact on pupil progress over time.
