The FIU Global First Year Program combines credit-bearing courses from the first year of a student’s degree with additional support services, instruction tailored to their academic and language level, and cultural experiences, helping to ensure their future success. Additionally, the Global First Year experience provides more than just academic, language, and cultural growth. With the included Career Accelerator program, students can also gain valuable professional skills that prepare them for a successful career. The Career Accelerator is specifically designed for international students and includes four semesters of professional development and career guidance, skills-based training, opportunities for exclusive internships, unique workshops, real-world experiences, and cross-cultural group work. The Department of Modern Languages offers a Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese, primarily intended for students with a special interest in the language and culture of Brazil. It is recommended that interested students combine Portuguese studies with a first or second major in a related or complementary area, such as Spanish, French, History, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, or International Business. Students interested in Portuguese can also take advantage of study abroad opportunities offered through FIU, including the Study Abroad Summer Program and the Celpe-Bras Proficiency Exam in Portuguese. Some courses available in these programs, beyond basic language instruction, contribute to the Portuguese major, minor, and certificate.
